 "There have been numerous deadly Earthquakes over the last 10 years such as: the Earthquake in Bam, Iran, which killed 30.000 people and destroyed that city; The Earthquake, which caused the devastating 2004 Boxing day Tsunami that killed approximately 230.000 people and had a very heavy death toll on coastlines in the Indian ocean; The powerful 2005 Pakistan Earthquake, which killed approximately 82.000 people and destroyed that city and even killed people in other countries; The 2008 Sichuan Earthquake, which destroyed that whole region and killed over 80.000 people; The Earthquake in Haiti, which took over 230.000 lives and utterly destroyed that capital; The super-quake in Chile that literally “shortened the day”; The Earthquake in Baja California (April 04) and China (April 13), which claimed over 2.200 lives. Several strong quakes these past months have struck the Indonesian region, one quake measuring 7.8 (April 06) and another 7.2 (May 09) in magnitude. 27 earthquakes this year have been measuring 6.5 or greater in magnitude as of July 19 2010. USGS' lists a total of 43 significant earthquakes worldiwde for 2010, and we have over 4 months left to go! There's no doubt at all that there will be many more Deadly Earthquakes to come in the very near future! 

The world has also been experiencing destructive weather patterns, such as Hurricane Katrina and the 2008 Myanmar Cyclone which killed 140.000 people! There was severe cold snaps this winter all over the world with snowfall in California and Florida, and all over the United States and many casualties in Europe. The weather worldwide has been growing increasingly weird, with super storms raging all over the Earth, causing huge hailstones as big as baseballs to fall down damaging homes and cars and huge flash floods turning streets into rivers in Melbourne, Australia. And the flooding that took place in Rio de Janeiro, “and I can assure you”, a witness says, “that it looked like the biblical Flood, I mean, the rain didn't stop.” Frightening mile-wide tornadoes wreak havoc in Mississippi causing wide destruction, and on May 3rd 2010 Tennessee was hit by a historic flooding that have inundated highways, businesses and thousands of homes. — It doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure out that something is going on here. But let's see what the US Corps of Engineers had to say about the recent flooding — “According to the Army Corps of Engineers, the flood that hit Nashville was a 1,000-year flood - an event that could be expected to happen once in every 1,000 years on average.” — The floods this year across the US have been particularly severe. US is not singled out, all Earth is affected by planet wide disaster! 

Just these past few months (May, June), flooding around the Earth have been apocalyptic in nature. One severely hit area was Asia, particularly China. — Some headlines went as far as to declare “China Under Deluge”, so severe was the flooding. Another report said that “about 3 percent of China’s population (that's an incredible 42 million people!) have so far been impacted by torrential rain, flooding and landslides”. It goes on to say that “hundreds, possibly thousands of people have been killed, and many more are missing in southern China after days of apocalyptic rain, violent flooding and massive landslides... At least 100,000 homes have been destroyed or damaged, with millions of hectares (acres) of crops spoiled by the deadly deluge.” — In the Americas, particularly hard hit was the US with many other floods besides the ones mentioned. And Brazil too, with a most recent “apocalyptic flooding which swept away entire villages, killing dozens and causing thousands to disappear and massive landslides killing many, with hundreds more missing, leaving tens of thousands homeless as entire towns were destroyed and engulfed when dams burst and river levels rose,” one reporter said. — The recent flood disasters which affected large parts of Europe, was a particularly devastating series of weather events which occurred across several Central European countries. Poland was the worst affected with cities and towns covered in water and many casualties. Flash floods in Romania swept over entire communities killing dozens. The flooding that took place in France was the worst to hit the area in hundreds of years. Austria, Czech Republic, Germany, Hungary, Slovakia, Serbia and Ukraine were also affected by the recent flood apocalypse in Europe. The floods this year across Europe, US, China and the other parts of the world have been particularly severe with many first “worst floods” in recorded history, and 2010 have hardly even gone half through yet! No one is spared from this onslaught of doomsday! What on Earth is going on here? There's no doubt that there will be more strange and “new” weather anomalies worldwide to come in the very near future! 

There have also been reports of food shortages this year in many parts of the world. A recent report show that there might be a looming food crisis on the horizon, with many crops and farmlands completely wiped out due to severe flooding and droughts all over the world. — Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, Iraq, Chad, Niger, Pakistan, and Myanmar have all set new records for their hottest temperatures of all time over the past six weeks. The remarkable heat continued over Africa and Asia late this week. The Asian portion of Russia recorded its highest temperate in history yesterday, when the mercury hit 42.3°C (108.1°F) at Belogorsk, near the Amur River border with China. The previous record was 41.7°C (107.1°F) at nearby Aksha on July 21, 2004. (The record for European Russia is 43.8°C–110.8°F–set on August 6, 1940, at Alexandrov Gaj near the border with Kazakhstan.) Also, on Thursday, Sudan recorded its hottest temperature in its history when the mercury rose to 49.6°C (121.3°F) at Dongola. The previous record was 49.5°C (121.1°F) set in July 1987 in Aba Hamed. We’ve now had eight countries in Asia and Africa, plus the Asian portion of Russia, that have beaten their all-time hottest temperature record during the past two months. This includes Asia’s hottest temperature of all-time, the astonishing 53.5°C (128.3°F) mark set on May 26 in Pakistan. — The heat waves that have plagued the world these past 10 years have been unprecedented in intensity with all time records year after year, and with over 35.000 victims alone in 2003. Thousands of causalities have been reported in Russia from drowning when people tried to escape the heat, and the Summer haven't even started yet! Do these disasters strike in waves?, as with a period of calm that is followed by a period of stress? 2008 was pretty disastrous. 2009 was reportedly a calm year. Can the same be said about 2010? 

The point is that life on Earth from here on for us weak human beings will become much more hard and apocalyptic in nature. The gravitational pull of a planet entering the inner solar system would indeed have profound effects on all the orbiting bodies, including Earth. Evidence suggests that most of the known planets in our solar system are undergoing global warming, in fact “the polar icecaps of Mars are melting and receding at several miles a year, much faster than ours and that the moons of Saturn and Jupiter are melting, and that Jupiter is developing a second giant red spot, an enormous hurricane-like storm which is thought to be the result of a sudden warming on our solar system's largest planet.” — “Dr. Imke de Pater of Berkeley University says some parts of Jupiter are now as much as six degrees Celsius warmer than just a few years ago” — Neptune's moon also seems to have heated up significantly recently. Parts of its frozen nitrogen surface have begun melting and turning to gas, making Triton's atmosphere denser. “And I promise, I haven't left my SUV idling on any of those planets or moons. Honest, I haven't.” one commentator said. — And not long ago it was announced that the giant-planet Jupiter had lost one of its belts! — “It was there last year, but when Jupiter came out from behind the sun on its yearly orbit, it was gone. Jupiter with only one belt is almost like seeing Saturn when its rings are edge-on and invisible for a time — it just doesn't look right,” a skywatcher wrote. — And recently, newly released Hubble Space Telescope photos reveals that Pluto is Turning Red! Astronomers say “that it has about 20 percent more red than it used to have.” — These changes are not only to be blamed on the Sun, since such drastic changes on planets so far away, as with Pluto — if only caused by the sun — would literally fry the Earth. No, these changes could also be caused by an approaching interstellar body!

So, what are the effects on earth besides natural disasters? NASA scientists on December 16, 2008 announced that “THEMIS spacecraft (a series of satellites monitoring earth's magnetosphere) have discovered a breach in Earth's magnetic field ten times larger than anything previously thought to exist.” NASA’s THEMIS mission comprises 5 probes launched in February 2007 to measure the Earth’s magnetic field. According to Wenhui Li, a University of New Hampshire space physicist analyzing the NASA THEMIS mission: "The opening was huge—four times wider than Earth itself. "Jimmy Raeder, another University of New Hampshire scientist analyzing the THEMIS project data said: "We've seen things like this before but never on such a large scale. The entire day-side of the magnetosphere was open to the solar wind." The breach is allowing up to 20 times the normal amount of solar particles to enter the Earth’s atmosphere according to the NASA announcement.

The breach in the magnetosphere was not causing any great concern for the moment since solar activity is at a minimum. In fact, the last time the sun was so inactive was in 1913. The lack of solar activity has even caused some scientists to speculate that we are about to enter a mini-Ice Age. Most NASA scientists however agree that by 2012, when the sun moves into its solar maximum, the current situation will change dramatically. In 2006 a team of solar scientists led by Mausumi Dikpati of the National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR) predicted that the "next sunspot cycle [#24] will be 30% to 50% stronger than the previous one."

The sun’s heightened sunspot activity will lead to coronal mass ejections (CME) filled with solar particles or plasma that will dramatically spread out through the solar wind. Increased quantities of plasma will be carried to the Earth in giant solar waves passing through the breach in the magnetosphere. This is how one NASA scientist explained the situation: "We're entering Solar Cycle 24. For reasons not fully understood, CMEs in even-numbered solar cycles (like 24) tend to hit Earth with a leading edge that is magnetized north. Such a CME should open a breach and load the magnetosphere with plasma just before the storm gets underway. It's the perfect sequence for a really big event."

The big event alluded to by NASA THEMIS scientists is major disruption to satellites, telecommunications systems and the electrical power grid. What the scientists didn’t discuss is the impact on the human bioelectrical system. By 2012, individuals will need to learn to be “solar surf riders” to survive the dramatic waves of plasma pouring in through the Earth’s magnetosphere at astounding rates. According to David Sibeck, a THEMIS project scientist, the breach will last for the entire span of the next solar cycle. He warned: "It should be that we're in for a tough time in the next 11 years."

For the next 11 years, as the magnetosphere breach continues to allow up to 20 times the normal amount of plasma to bombard the Earth and the human bioelectrical system and this activity peaks around 2012, what can the Obama administration take to help prepare American citizens and humanity more generally for what’s about to occur as we approach and pass beyond 2012 over the next 11 years? What can private individuals do to prepare for the massive social and psychological effects of the human bioelectrical system as it responds to a surge in solar plasma energy entering the earth’s environment in unprecedented rates?

See, maybe this doomsday apocalypse conspiracy, 2012 prophecy end of the world isn't so crazy after all. Even NASA Scientists admit remarkable events are about to take place in the very near future! These giant leaks that have been found in Earth's magnetosphere, (the region around our planet that shields us from severe solar storms) are obviously causing concern. Maybe it's much worse then it's played out to be. Do you really expect NASA to tell us how it really is? Now in 2012 the sun's poles are expected to reverse when the sun reach its solar maximum (the period when the sun is as most active), during this time a massive solar storm could wreak havoc on earth - usually this is no problem - but now due to the 'cracks' in it, Earth's protective Magnetosphere may fail us, so the violent solar and electromagnetic radiation will make it through and cause many problems to life as we know it (eg: disabling communication satellites, mobile phones, effective sleep patterns, & radiation poisoning of humans). Also as earth has to absorb extra radiation & energy this will cause possible changes within the earth's core - with energy being re-dissipated from within the earth with new volcanoes formed and crust movement. With a weakening magnetosphere, more radiation and magnetically-charged plasma from our Sun (or from an approaching planet or star) will greatly influence the core of our Earth (which is magnetic), and that in turn will cause an up-tick of major earthquakes. The 'dyno' of our planet (iron core spinning within an iron-rich crust) creates a magnetic field, that is the nature of Earth's structure. Our magnetic field is a reflection of what our core is doing in relation to our crust/magma. When there's a shift within our 'dyno' our magnetic field will show it. And any shift within the 'dyno' also means ripples within our magma and our crust, ripples in our crust=earthquakes.
Shifts in our core, magma or crust are simply caused by the fact that the magma is not a uniform fluid and the core is not perfectly round, so the motion between them is not always smooth. When a shift occurs, the magnetic field will show it.
There will most likely be magnetic tell-tale signs before all great Earthquakes. Only problem is, you can't predict the location of the quake. The solar system's, sun's and galaxy's magnetic fields also influence ours, so any external magnetic forces (as from an approaching body) can also cause earthquakes here in the reverse order that our earth causes them, i.e. the magnetic field shifts the earth's core/magma/crust and causes the quake. 

Planet X's mass, high-plasma-charged magnetism, and density is such that it disrupts the surface of every planet it passes. In fact, history shows a few years prior to its passage that its far reaching electromagnetic influence changes Earth's core flows, triggering major weather changes. Volcanic and seismic activity start to change 3-4 decades prior to each passage. Since 1996 traditional weather has changed dramatically, breaking all time records regularly. The up-tick of quakes, volcanic incidents and changes in electromagnetics are being kept out of the media as much as possible. Weather alone can falsely be blamed on “global warming” and sun cycles but not earth's rumblings and solar system wide changes at the same time. 

99% of the universe is made up of charged-plasma at the atomic level. Planets are densely charged plasma spheres. The approach of Planet X (Nibiru) back into our immediate solar system is sending a tremendous amount of electrically charged plasmatic energy particles in waves to all the planets in our solar system via the filamentary magnetic field lines that criss-cross the universe. The entire Universe is a connected web of electricity and plasma is the conductor.
The media would have you believe that the pollution of our industrial civilization is the cause of the weather changes or has caused “global warming” over the last few years. Since all planets in our solar system are experiencing dramatic changes, how can any of this be blamed on our irresponsible actions? Why do they fail to mention the seismic and volcanic changes occurring simultaneously? Why would ice cores show regular and dramatic changes in Earth's climate from the past? When you understand how our sun and every other planet in our solar system are being effected by Planet X's approach, you'll see how ridiculous the media cover-up becomes. 

This is the Russian perspective on earth changes by the Academy of Sciences. Volcanic and seismic activity have increased 400-500 percent since 1975. All planets are changing, Earth is not singled out. Basically, everything in the solar system is experiencing unusual phenomena, increased activity and unusual weather. Hard facts are going unreported by western media.
Dr. Dmitriev's work shows that the planets themselves are changing. They are undergoing variations in their atmospheres. For example, the Martian atmosphere is getting sizably thicker and Earth's moon is growing an atmosphere and according to Dmitriev, there is a 6,000 kilometer deep layer of Natrium that wasn't there previously. He says that we're having this kind of change in the upper levels of Earth's atmosphere where HO gas is forming that wasn't there before; it simply did not exist in the quantity that it does now. It's not related to global warming and it's not related to CFCs or fluorocarbon emissions or any of that stuff. It's just showing up. 

Magnetic fields and brightness of the planets are changing. The planets are experiencing sizable increases in their overall luminosity. Venus for example, is showing us marked elevations in its overall brightness. Jupiter has such a high energetic charge now that there is actually a visible tube of ionizing radiation that has formed between it and its moon. You can actually see the luminous energy tube in photographs that have been taken recently. 

Part of Dr. Dmitriev’s research shows that the glowing plasma at the edge of our Solar System has recently increased 1000 percent. Higher-charged energy is in turn exciting the plasma and causing more of it to form, so you see more luminosity, more brightness. This energy is then flowing into the Sun, which in turn emits the energy and spreads it out along its equatorial plane, which is called the Ecliptic. In addition, the magnetic field strength of each planet has increased. Uranus and Neptune appear to have had recent pole shifts. When the Voyager 2 space probe flew past Uranus and Neptune, the apparent north and south magnetic poles were sizably offset from where the rotational pole was. In one case, it was 50 degrees off and in the other case the difference was around 40 degrees, both of which are pretty big changes. 

Natural disasters increased 410 percent between 1963 and 1993. This does not take into account the largest increases that have taken place in the last 8-9 years since then! Dr. Dmitriev did a very elaborate calculation of natural disasters, to come up with these figures. Even the Sun's magnetic field increased by 230 percent since 1901.

A more recent study shows dramatic rise in natural disasters over past decade: “The number of events have gone up very, very dramatically,” CRED Director Debarati Guha-Sapir said in Geneva. During the 2000 to 2009 period, there were 385 disasters, an increase of 233 percent since 1980 to 1989, and of 67 percent since 1990 to 1999, according to CRED data. Though earthquakes made up 60 percent of natural disasters from 2000 to 2009, climate-related events, such as droughts, storms and floods, have made up the majority of disasters overall, increasing tenfold since data was first collected in 1950. “Have climate-related disasters increased? The answer is yes,” Sapir said, adding, “But it is not clear that climate change itself is an important factor.”Sapir said that CRED lacked sufficient research to determine the role of global warming in the increase in climate-related natural disasters.”

Notice how the “total” number of earthquakes drastically declined from 2008 to 2009. This is not to be misunderstood with earthquake-strength and severity which steadily have been on the increase (see graph below) even though the total number of quakes have been in decline (for now). Is this then the calm before the storm? If these earthquakes strike in waves as with a period of calm that is followed on a period of stress, then naturally we'll see a decline of earthquakes, as the first wave recedes, which could be understood by the period of calm that was noted for 2008 / 2009. In the same way will there be an increase of earthquakes, in the subsequent period of stress, which is to be understood with the second wave crashing ashore, which can be interpreted as being the year 2010. And what if earth was to be hit by a tsunami-like wave of earthquakes, which instead of receding, just keep coming? Doubt nothing less if we're entering the time of tribulation! “For when they shall say, Peace and safety; then sudden destruction cometh upon them, as travail upon a woman with child; and they shall not escape.” (ref: 1 Thessalonians 5:3) – “and there was a great earthquake, such an earthquake as was not since men were upon the earth, so mighty an earthquake, and so great. And the great city was split into three parts, and the cities of the nations fell.” (ref: Revelations / Apocalypse 16:18-19)

Apart from the "long-term" trends shown above, which show an ongoing persistent increase, it is perhaps more stark to record that earthquakes across the planet show a marked increase in activity since 1994 (first graph). There are more “major” earthquakes occurring now, and this on an ever more frequent basis. The trends in nature here support the wider realization of prophesy about the "End Times", namely that an increase in earthquake activity is a pre-requisite for the "second coming of Jesus Christ" foretold in the bible. It does not indicate how close we are to this event, but suggests it is not too far away. 

Speaking of the signs that will happen, leading to his return to judge the peoples of earth (at the end of the age), Jesus is quoted as saying ‘in various places there will be famines and earthquakes - these things are the beginning of birth pangs’ (ref: Matthew 24). Now, because birth pains begin small and then increase in intensity and frequency, this passage can be interpreted to mean that earthquakes (and famines - caused primarily through lack of rainfall in certain areas) will increase both in frequency and impact/strength prior to Jesus’ second coming. Although Jesus is clear that no one will know the day or the hour, and his return will indeed happen “when you do not expect”, he does give us broad pointers, one of these being natural events – like earthquakes. 

All this is happening all at the same time and it's all working up to a crescendo where there is no turning back! Earth is in for some massive and catastrophic earth changes as Nibiru approaches. Floods, earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, a possible pole shift and other natural disasters will be so severe, that “only a few hundred million people will survive.” – It's also speculate that Nibiru might even eclipse the Earth for several days, citing the “three days of darkness” predicted in the Bible. We can also read about Noah and the great flood in Genesis, which some ancient sources describe as being caused by a passing planetary body. Evidence also suggests that pole shifts have occurred in the past. For example, in Antarctica, have huge forests been found with warm climate trees peeking through layers of snow and ice where today nothing grows, proving that the continent was much warmer in the past and, located much farther south than it currently is, even as far as the equator! Evidence also suggests that Siberia once was located much more South than it currently is and in a warmer climate, with frozen Mammoths that have been found with food still in their mouths, indicating a sudden and catastrophic temperature change. If a rogue planet passed near earth and gravity forced the poles of earth to shift, then this dramatic event could very well explain such a sudden and catastrophic drop in temperatures! Quoted below is what one author had to say about sudden and catastrophic earth changes taking place in Alaska, which in turn indicates that it also was located much more South in the past, by taking into account the various warm climate animals that have been found: 

“In many places, Alaskan muck is packed with animal bones and debris in trainload lots. Bones of mammoths, mastodons, several kind of bison, horses, wolves, bears and lions tell a story of a faunal population, within this frozen mass lie the twisted parts of animals and trees intermingled with lenses of ice and layers of peat and mosses. It looks as though in the midst of some cataclysmic catastrophe the whole Alaskan world of living animals and plants was suddenly frozen in mid-motion like a grim charade, twisted and torn trees are piled in splintered masses, at least four considerable layers of volcanic ash may be traced in these deposits, although they are extremely warped and distorted.”

Other recent proofs of an approaching doomsday apocalypse in or around 2012, is a process called “magnetic pole shift”. This shift, which is happening right now as we speak, could be the only other plausible explanation (besides from the sun or an approaching body), for the strange weather, crust and magma phenomenon that have occurred recently on a global scale... “Magnetic north, which is the place where compass needles actually point, is near but not exactly in the same place as the geographic North Pole. Right now, magnetic north is close to Canada's Ellesmere Island. The magnetic north pole had moved little from the time scientists first located it in 1831. Then in 1904, the pole began shifting northeastward at a steady pace of about 9 miles (15 kilometers) a year. In 1989 it sped up again, and in 2007 scientists confirmed that the pole is now galloping toward Siberia at 34 to 37 miles (55 to 60 kilometers) a year.” — The point is (I believe) that the North Pole not only moves South, but that it actually moves toward facing the Sun! Does extra-input of magnetically charged-plasma from the Sun cause Earth's poles to shift?, or is the approach of Planet X from the Earth's south causing the poles to shift? Two same magnetically-charged sides will not unite to one-another but reject one and the other. In the same way will a magnets north align to a magnets south by this same force of law. Thus, south pole of earth may very well be forced to “shift” by the greater force of magnetism from the approaching planet x, (which is believed to approach earth from the south, or from below the earth – depending on how you look at it).

Evidence do show that our poles have relocated in the past, and they will probably relocate again. Regardless of what caused the shift, the poles would be relocated and climates everywhere would change dramatically. Lands of ice would melt and cause incredible floods. The new poles would freeze over, with the intense cold instantly killing life. Deserts would gain moisture; rainforests would dry up. Flora and fauna would need to adapt to the new conditions or become extinct. If all the regions of our planet previously had different climates, and the transition had been violent, then we would expect some evidence to have been found...

But all the mythology that has evolved in Christianity about the "Devil" is completely absent in Judaism. In effect, Christianity has created a 4th god. Judaism forbids the worship of any god but HaShem.

Doomsday 2012 NASA's Smoking Gun

“It's not carved in stone,” certainly doesn't apply in this case.

ViewZone asked me to write a story about the Mayan Calendar. There is a common belief that the calendar holds a prophecy that the world will end in 2012. I knew very little about the whole topic when I began doing the research. I like to think I had an open mind. My investigation began with mainstream archaeology and expert interpretations of the calendar. But it soon took a turn that made my hair literally stand on end. I am now convinced that these prophecies are true.

To understand what is likely to happen to Earth and its people, you will need to remain calm and try to follow the facts. It's not as simple as some people describe. It requires an understanding of some fairly complicated science, but I think I can explain this in a way that you will easily understand.

The Calendar -- A Descrption

First, the Mayan calendar is also sometimes called the Aztec Calendar. This calendar is recorded as a carving on the Aztec "sun stone," currently on exhibit in the National Museum of Anthropology and History located within Chapultepec Park, Mexico City. There's a lot we could say about this carved stone but most of those details are irrelevant to the "end times."

Our modern calendar, called the Gregorian Calendar, has days, weeks, months and years. In the Mayan Calendar it's more complex. In fact, it's really three calendars at the same time.

First there's a religious calendar that takes 260 days to complete a full religious cycle. There are 20 "weeks" made up of 13 days. Each week has a special name, a graphic logo and unique meaning associated with it. This reminds me of the Chinese years which cycle through "the year of the rat" and "the year of the monkey," etc., each with it's special image and meaning.

Next there is the solar calendar. This has 365 days, like our modern calendar. It's divided in 18 months of 20 days each. At the end of the cycle there's five special days considered to be unlucky because they don't belong to any month. Each of the months has a special name, graphic logo and some special significance, similar to the icons for the weeks in the religious calendar.

So it is possible, for any specific date, the calculate the religious week and the solar month and to predict the influences that might be guiding fate. But that's not really what's involved with the prophecy of 2012. To understand that we must look at the third calendar, called the long count.

While the first two cycles could be thought of as cogs or gears (see below) revolving through time, the long count is a linear number of days, starting from the first day, "1," and counting through each day to the present. Any day in history can be recorded using the long count and, with some simple mathematics, the corresponding religious week and solar month can also be found.

In writing this article, I thought about creating a javascript program that would do this calculation. My friend, Gene Matlock, then told me that when he was in Mexico, he found a place that sold wooden, mechanical calculators with gears that did just that. He said that Mexicans sometimes used these mechanical calendars to foretell the future or to find auspicious times for special events like marriage or births. Anyway, although it might be nice to know the religious and solar significance, it's the long count that foretells Doomsday.

Cog or "gears" can be used to compute the religious and solar cycles for any date.

The days of the long count are numbered with an unusual system. Instead of writing numbers as we do, from right to left with each place being a multiple of 10 (i.e. 10000, 1000, 100, 10, 1), the Mayans had only 5 places.

The first place recorded a number from 0 to 20. To the left, the second place could have a range from 0 to 17; the third from 0 to 19; the fourth from 0 to 19 and the last from 0 to 12. The numbers were written from right to left, like our system, separated by a dot. Instead of multiples of 10, the first place had a multiple of 1 (like our system); the second place a multiple of 20; the third a multiple of 360; the fourth a multiple of 7200 and the fifth a multiple of 144000.

So a long count number, for example, could be written as 4.12.5.9.0 and would be calculated as follows:

(4 x 144000) + (12 x 7200) + (5 x 360) + (9 x 20) + (0 x 1) or a long count of 664,380.

It's not too difficult to realize that the maximum number which can be recorded this way would be12.19.19.17.20, although some researchers like to write it as 13.0.0.0.0. This amounts to a long count number of 1,872,000 days or 5125.36 years of our modern calculations. Obviously, the calendar is very old!

Over the years, archaeologists have found carved monuments that recorded the long count for known dates in Mayan history. Once a date was fixed in time, it was easy to determine "day 1" as August 11th, 3114 BC. And it was also easy to calculate the date at which the calendar would end --December 21st, 2012.

The 'Comalcalco Brick' [right], is the second fragment known to reference to Dec. 21, 2012 or Dec. 23, 2012.The date inscribed on the brick is a 'Calendar Round', a combination of a day and month position that will repeats every 52 years. The brick date does coincide with the end of the 13th Baktun; Baktuns were roughly 394-year periods and 13 was a significant, sacred number for the Mayas. The Mayan Long Count calendar begins in 3114 B.C., and the 13th Baktun ends around Dec. 21, 2012. The third glyph on the brick seems to read as the verb huli, "he/she/it arrives." Both inscriptions — the Tortuguero tablet and the Comalcalco brick -- were probably carved about 1,300 years ago and both are cryptic in some ways. The Tortuguero inscription describes something that is supposed to occur in 2012 involving Bolon Yokte, a mysterious Mayan god associated with both war and creation. However, erosion and a crack in the stone make the end of the passage almost illegible, though some read the last eroded glyphs as perhaps saying, "He will descend from the sky."

Trust me, just because the calendar ends doesn't prove that time, or the world, or life will end. We need to look carefully at December 21, 2012 and try to understand why the Mayans never calculated a date beyond this point in time. To do this we must move from Archaeology to the science of Astronomy and Astrophysics.

It's all about the Sun

It's ironic (or maybe not) that the Mayan Calendar is often called the "sun stone." While the calendar does have "solar" days, acknowledging the 365 days it takes for Earth to rotate around the Sun, it is also true that the Sun plays a key role in the final day of the "long count." To understand what will happen to the Sun on December 21, 2012, we need to review some scientific terms like "ecliptic," "barycenter," and "sunspots." These are important in the discussion that follows. We'll start with the most difficult one first.

Terms we will encounter...What is the Barycenter? You've no doubt heard that Earth revolves around the sun. Well, actually, that's not quite true! Have you heard the term "center of gravity"? It's a technical-sounding term for something pretty simple. It's the exact center of all the material (that is, mass) that makes up the object. For example, if you have a straight stick, like a ruler or yardstick, there's a place at the middle where you can balance it on your finger. That's its center of gravity. But the center of gravity may or may not be the point that is exactly in the middle, distance-wise, of the object. Some parts of the object may be heavier (denser) than others. If you have something like a sledge hammer that is heavier on one end than the other, the center of gravity will be much closer to the heavy end than the lighter end. To get an idea of where the center of gravity is, rest the ends of any object like the ruler or a pencil on one finger from each hand. Slowly move your fingers together without dropping the object. Your fingers will meet underneath the object's center of gravity. You can balance the object on one finger at that special place. The actual center of gravity could be close to the surface or deep inside, depending on whether the object is flat like a ruler or a dinner plate, or "three-dimensional," like a box or a ball. And if you let the object spin (like when you throw it), it will try to spin about that point. In the case of the Earth and the sun, both bodies actually revolve, or spin, around the very center of the mass (similar to center of gravity) between them. This point is called the "barycenter." Earth and the sun are "connected" by the gravity pulling them together. It's just like the light end and heavy end of the sledge hammer. Compared to the size of the sun, Earth is about like a flea on a cat! So the center of mass between the Earth and the sun is almost--but not quite--the very center of the sun. In the case of a planet the size of Jupiter, which is 318 times as massive as Earth, the barycenter of Jupiter and the sun is a bit further from the sun's center. So, as Jupiter revolves around the sun, the sun itself is actually revolving around this slightly off-center point, located just outside its center. Thus, a planet the size of Jupiter will make the sun (or any star) appear to wobble a tiny bit. This picture shows you that the center of mass and barycenter can be slightly different points. It isn't meant to be very accurate! We can take advantage of this bit of knowledge and look for large planets in other solar systems by learning to detect this type of tiny wobble in the star's position.

For now, let's forget all the small planets and focus on Jupiter. It makes one complete trip around the Sun every 11.861773 years. There's a new theory put forth by Dr. Rollin Gillespie which shows that Jupiter, and to a smaller degree the other less massive planets, may trigger the 11 year cycle of sunspots and solar flares.  source:

Part 2 - The Previous Doomsday of 12,950 BC: what was it like?Since I wrote the doomsday article I have received lots of e-mails, mostly asking me if it is really true and what they should do.
I know I had a difficult time coping with this topic, both emotionally and spiritually. I can't say that I have perfected the right "attitude" about what the future holds. To be honest, I think I always held back from accepting the facts. I had hope. But this new evidence forces me to open my eyes and soul to setting my life in order. I hope it will do the same for you.
Although "doomsday" is frequently linked with the Mayan calendar, this is just coincidental. December 21, 2012 is a significant day in astronomy because of a number of important events that will impact our Sun. It would be a "doomsday" even if we never knew about the Mayan calendar. Yet, the more we understand this ancient civilization and appreciate their knowledge of astronomy, we must assume they knew this date to be auspicious. So let's just talk about astronomy here. There's a lot of information. I'll try to make it easy to understand.
Glazed donuts on the Moon
Let's begin back in the 1960s with the Apollo 11 manned landing on the moon. On one of their EVA's (extra-vehicular activities), the astronauts photographed and took samples from some small craters, about 20cm to 1.5 meters across. When they examined the floors of these craters they noticed what looked like glazed donuts. These were actually chunks of moon dirt that were coated by glass.

The glazed areas are clearly concentrated toward the top surfaces of protuberances, although they exist also on some sides. Points and edges appear to be strongly favored for the glazing process. In some cases, droplets appear to have run down an inclined surface for a few millimeters and congealed there. [1]

Hardly anyone in the general public was made aware of this discovery and, even if they were, thay could hardly have realized the significance.
But in 1969, an article in Science by T. Gold [1] proposed a theory of how they were made. Glass, as we know, is made from melting sand. It occurs natually near sources of high temperature, such as volcanos and meteor impacts. The atom bomb tests in New Mexico's White Sands area produced a small "lake" of glass at ground zero. So it was never a question about the lunar glass also having been created by something very hot.
The fact that the glaze was confined to small patches, 0.5 to 10mm, suggested to scientists that the surface had been zapped rather than slow-cooked. And the likely source of this zap was our Sun. Gold estimated that the solar luminosity would have had to increase by 100 times what it is normally, for a duration of from 10 to 100 seconds.
Also, because of the lack of debris or dirt covering this glass, it must have occurred within the last 30,000 years. This made Gold propose that the Sun -- our Sun -- does this every 10,000 years or more. He suggested that future research should look for a "trigger" event -- possibly a large comet or asteroid impacting the surface of the Sun. He estimated this would only have to be 100 km and weigh 3 x 10²¹grams.
Decades passed and this theory didn't receive much attention. Then, as it often does, the theory got a fresh look by a genius, Dr. Paul LaViolette. He was not satisfied with the source of the glass being caused by a solar blast, mainly because the output would have had to be on the scale of a nova, not just a flare. He envisioned another possibility.
LaViolette envisioned a large solar flare or coronal mass ejection (CME) that would become magnetically entrapped in the Earth's magnetosphere [2]. The magnetosphere would then hold on to this fireball of radiation like a magnetic thermos bottle, allowing the Moon and Earth to be exposed for a duration of time long enough to really "flash bake" their surfaces.
Critics quickly denounced LaViolette's theory citing evidence of "cosmic dust" and rare elements in the lunar glass and concluding that the heat source was from a meteor impact. [3]
But LaViolette proposed that this cosmic dust was likely present on the surface of the Moon during the time it was melted into the glass. In fact, he proposed that the entire solar system was full of this cosmic dust at the time of this solar eruption. He was vindicated when polar ice cores showed unusual cosmic dust deposits at srata marking the end of the last ice age [4]. This time period, about 12,950 BCE, approximates the current age of the Moon glass. So where did all this cosmic dust come from?

Like Earth, our entire solar system has its own atmosphere, called the heliopause. This "bubble" surrounds the Sun and planets as it travels through galactic space. Like our earth's magnetosphere, the movement of the heliopause creates a rounded "head" and a narrowing "tail." Actually, it's more egg shaped (see above). Until recently, astronomers believed that our solar system was a region relatively free from cosmic dust. The cosmic dust and frozen material of space were kept outside this protective bubble.
This was confirmed when the IRAS and Ulysses spacecrafts showed infrared images of the solar system, surrounded by whispy clouds of cosmic dust that increase in density just beyond Saturn.
So if the cosmic dust is surrounding the heliopause, what would make it suddenly enter the heliopause and how would this coincide with huge solar flares? LaViolette envisioned something disrupting the heliopause from the outside, impacting it and drawing cosmic dust inside with it and energizing the Sun. The energy of such an impact would be immense. The most logical place to look for such enormous energy was the Milky Way Galaxy.
The smoking gun
Examining the shape of the cosmic dust clouds, the IRAS satellite team reported that the cloud was tilted relative to the solar system's ecliptic -- the narrow plane containing our planets. LaViolette realized that this odd alignment tracked back to the Galactic center. This was quickly verified by NASA's Ulysses spacecraft and New Zealand's AMOR space radar observatory. Whatever caused the last ice age to end, the Sun to flare up and caused the glass to form on the Moon, came from the center of the Milky Way Galaxy. The plot was getting more interesting.
Astronomers have known about intense radiation from space since the 1970s. Multiple bursts of powerful gamma rays were routinely detected and believed to originate from stars in the Milky Way. Assuming this energy originated locally, astronomers concluded this type of gamma ray burst was insignificant and harmless. Then, in December 1997, they had the technology and good luck to catch a strong gamma ray burst and track it. The source was not inside the Milky Way Galaxy. It was from a distant galaxy billions of light years away.
A review of other bursts showed that their assumptions had been wrong. All of the gamma ray bursts they were observing were from other galaxies far, far away. The amount of energy coming from objects so distant was a real shock. No one had ever imagined such powerful bursts could be generated by galactic centers. The thought of a burst coming from our own Milky Way galactic center was abysmal. A burst of the same intensity as the 1997 event, originating from inside the Milky Way, would deliver 100,000 time the lethal dose of radiation, killing every life form that was exposed. Could that really happen to us?
This question was answered on August 27^th, 1998 when an unusual 5 minute gamma ray pulse was located just 20,000 light years away in the constellation of Aquila. This may sound like a huge distance, but to astronomers this is just "next door." The Milky Way Galaxy, for example, is just 100,000 light years from end to end.
The 1998 event was close enough and strong enough to ionize Earth's upper atmosphere, damage a couple of spacecraft and disrupt global communication. Since then astronomers place gamma ray bursts from the Glaxy's core at the top of the list of things we don't want to happen.
Before Aquila, scientists just feared exploding stars -- novas and supernovas. Now things are different. It's like living in a ghetto and fearing drive-by shootings and random bullets. Then one day you learn that there's a nuclear bomb down the street, waiting to explode.
Not in my galaxy!
Ironically, all of these facts are incorporated in LaViolette's "superwave" theory. He concludes that there are cyclical and frequent explosions from the Galaxy's core. These waves of radiation advance outward to the edges of the Galaxy, impacting everything and causing stars to erupt in their path. He believes this is what has happened many times to our own solar system -- the most recent superwave of radiation being 14,950 years ago. He envisions the shock wave -- or superwave -- dragging cosmic dust along with it as it enters the heliopause and energizes our Sun.
Ice core samples support this view. Evidence of the effects from cosmic dust show at ice core strata corresponding to the years 11,880 to 11,785 BCE^*. This evidence, along with the Moon glass, the presence of cosmic dust and the abrupt and atypical end of the last ice age -- all point to an intimate relationship between extreme solar activity and gama radiation from the Milky Way Galaxy's center. [* These dates have been updated following more precise research from Dr. LaViolette.]
Something has changed
More troubling is the suggestion by some scientists that this powerful radiation may not require a dramatic burst or explosion to cause eruptions in the Sun. Physicists at nearly a dozen research institutions, including New York University, have discovered evidence for very high energy gamma rays emitting from a narrow band at the equator of the Milky Way. These gamma ray levels mark the highest energies ever detected from the Galaxy.

The gamma rays had a median energy of 3.5 trillion electron-volts, or 3500 times the mass-energy of a proton. Previous satellite experiments have seen gamma-ray emissions along the galactic equator reaching up to energies of only 30 billion electron-volts.
Perhaps related to this is the puzzling fact that, even though we have witnessed no Galactic explosions or "bursts", the measurements of cosmic dust streaming inside the heliopause as been steadily increasing [6] to almost three times since the last solar maximum in 2001.
During the solar maximum of each 11 year cycle, the polarity of the Sun shifts -- North becomes South and visa versa. This brief period of magnetic instability allows some cosmic dust to enter the heliopause because the Sun's "shields" are reduced. But once the new polarity is established, the Sun usually quickly blocks the dust. This time it didn't happen. Cosmic dust has been streaming in from the Glactic center and astronomers are at aloss to explain why.
It's likely that the solar system is already experiencing the invasive energy from the Galactic equator as we move into position and align with it on 2012.
Yes, there's more!
What will it be like when this happens to us? Perhaps the most dramatic evidence of what we can expect in 2012 comes from the most unlikely place -- ancient petroglyphs! Ancient rock carvings from around the globe, created during the last solar "zap" 14,950 years ago, seem to illustrate a spectacular event that happened when the Earth was last hit by extremely high radiation. This is a little difficult to explain, but I'll try.

 Viewed from the top, the aurora actually forms a luminous and electrically charged cup (or chalice) shape extending into space from each pole.We are all familiar with the sparks that flash brightly when we discharge electrical current. Lightening is a good example. Extremely high energy, called plasma, has been shown to form unique shapes when it is made to discharge -- especially around a sphere. The northern lights are an example of how this "spark" of plasma can form luminous, electrically charged sheets or tubes at the Earth's poles. The aurora, as it is called, occurs when mild energy from our Sun is trapped and dissipated by the Earth's magnetic poles.
Extremely high energy -- the type that would have caused the Moon glass and zapped the Earth -- creates a more elaborate discharge. Physicists call it a z-pinch formation. The z-pinch has been extensively researched by a group headed by Anthony L. Peratt with the Los Alamos National Laboratory, Los Alamos, NM and is described in his paper, Characteristics for the Occurrence of a High-Current Z-Pinch Aurora as Recorded in Antiquity Part II: Directionality and Source[5]. In this paper, Dr. Peratt illustrates the shape and characteristics of this high energy discharge on the Earth and shows thousands of petroglyph sites all over the globe where this z-pinch was observed and recorded in ancient carvings.

The term z-pinch originates from experiments where physicists made extremely high current to flow through thin wires that were arranged vertically in a tubular formation. They noticed that the energy quickly vaporized the wires, but the magnetic field generated by these paths remained and contained (or "pinched") the stream of energy, collapsing the streams of energy toward the center of the tube-like configuration -- called the z-axis. When the streams of energy converge, they form unique shapes that persist and can be observed as Birkeland elements, named for their discoverer.

If the Earth was zapped by high energy radiation, either from the Sun or the Galactic core, the planet would be surrounded with distinct lines of energy, converging at the North and South pole. These bands would continue to extend well out from the planet's poles and into space and would be visible from almost every point on Earth -- each with its own unique perspective.

Laboratory experiments whith a metal sphere, representing Earth, show the "chalice" shape created by high energy paths [above]. Oddly, repeated experiments show a preference for 56 "rays" or distinct bands of energy. This same number is often depicted in the ancient petroglyphs!

Recent global archiving of global petroglyphs have demonstrated that these shapes were correctly recorded in rock carvings by humans who withnessed this event!

When researchers went to various petroglyph sites that contained the z-pinch artifacts they carefully plotted the GPS location and noted if the ancient artist had a clear view of the Southern horizon. Almost all of the sites had this view. The number and extent of these global petroglyph sites clearly demonstrate the purpose of this art. Also, depending on the latitude, depictions of the z-pinch corresponded to the exact perspective that would have been expected.

So what do we know for sure?
The recent data shows that dramatic and potentially deadly effects can result from solar flares and coronal mass ejections. Substantial data suggests that an event, similar to the one anticipated in the 2012 "doomsday" scenario, occurred about 14,950 years ago and was recorded by ancient humans. This event appears to have lasted for several years in duration and was responsible for the abrupt end of the last ice age as well as a substantial culling of the human population.
The surprising findings of LaViolette, supported by other research, suggests that the extreme solar event corresponded to powerful radiation coming from the center of the Milky Way Galaxy and was associated with gamma rays and cosmic dust. Recent observations have shown a dramatic increase in gamma ray energy in the Galaxy's equator which will be in maximum alignment with our solar system on December 12, 2012. The past records in ice cores (strata from 13,880 to 13,785 BCE) suggest that intense radiation from this last event could have lasted many years. It seems highly likely that this alignment will cause another extreme solar event since other factors precipitating a "solar maximum" (i.e. the opposition of majorplanetary barycenters) also converge on this exact date.
The fact that galactic centers routinely radiate lethal gamma rays makes it unlikely that life, at least as we understand it, can survive in the universe. Sooner or later it is destined to be zapped.
A new genetic study of Y-chromosome variation by Dr. Marcus Feldman of Stanford University shows that the population from which the world's present population is derived consisted of about 2,000 individuals. Somehow, humans, flora and fauna did survive the past doomsday and some may yet survive past 2012. Indeed, many of the ancient prophecies I have encountered in my travels around the world have spoken of a "bright light" or "flash" followed by the "good seed" (i.e. humanity) which would rise up and repopulate the world.[7]
Organisms on Earth, including humans, have evolved during quiet times -- between the lethal blasts from our own Milky Way center. This means that we are indeed quite unique (and lucky). But it also means that our ultimate demise is part of the natural order. This universe is larger than ourselves and our lives. Mass Extinction: Why Did Half of N. America's Large Mammals Disappear 13.8 and 11.4 Thousand Years Ago?
As reported in ScienceDaily, years of scientific debate over the extinction of ancient species in North America have yielded many theories. However, new findings from J. Tyler Faith, GW Ph.D. candidate in the hominid paleobiology doctoral program, and Todd Surovell, associate professor of anthropology at the University of Wyoming, reveal that a mass extinction occurred in a geological instant.
During the late Pleistocene, 40,000 to 10,000 years ago, North America lost over 50 percent of its large mammal species. These species include mammoths, mastodons, giant ground sloths, among many others. In total, 35 different genera (groups of species) disappeared, all of different habitat preferences and feeding habits.
What event or factor could cause such a mass extinction? The many hypotheses that have been developed over the years include: abrupt change in climate, the result of comet impact, human overkill and disease. Some researchers believe that it may be a combination of these factors, one of them, or none.
A particular issue that has also contributed to this debate focuses on the chronology of extinctions. The existing fossil record is incomplete, making it more difficult to tell whether or not the extinctions occurred in a gradual process, or took place as a synchronous event. In addition, it was previously unclear whether species are missing from the terminal Pleistocene because they had already gone extinct or because they simply have not been found yet.
However, new findings from Faith indicate that the extinction is best characterized as a sudden event that took place between 13.8 and 11.4 thousand years ago. Faith's findings support the idea that this mass extinction was due to human overkill, comet impact or other rapid events rather than a slow attrition.
"The massive extinction coincides precisely with human arrival on the continent, abrupt climate change, and a possible extraterrestrial impact event" said Faith. "It remains possible that any one of these or all, contributed to the sudden extinctions. We now have a better understanding of when the extinctions took place and the next step is to figure out why."
